The Underground found its home among the abandoned network of tunnels underneath the A.K. These underground chambers were constructed during the time of the Old Kingdom, and later abandoned for the vertical expansion that makes up the a majority of the sprawling metropolis.
Entryways exist all over the city and even traverse the canals and waterways, which was one of their primary functions in the time of the Old Kingdom.
The earliest members of the Animal Underground first began converting these tunnels into habitable bases, gathering personel over time and growing in numbers directly underneath the A.K. These passageways have turned into meeting places and community centers, The Bazaar being a main attraction for its plethora of contraband goods and open source trading.
The underground started off small, just a band of Raccoons rats and cats that wanted to take something back from the corporations pillaging their livelihoods and resources. Most animals fit within the constructs of the A.K.s modern society, which is why a great number of the Undergrounds personal are nocturnal animals. Sometimes outcast from "regular" society, these animals found community and a cause.
The struggle to stay one step ahead of the various corporate spies and assassins has led collective to fortify and adapt to being discovered. The sheer size and cumulative distance of the tunnel network makes it almost impossible for its adversaries to attack the Underground head on, but still they try. Attacks on the home front are less common, while attacks through The Web are the corporations main way of striking back against the Undergrounds hacks.
For those that have come to call these tunnels home, it is the last bastion of hope in restoring balance to the Animal Kingdom. Initiated members of the collective protect the entrances and defend their location with tight lips and secrecy. Only those who have undergone the Oath Of The Initiate may enter, as they have promised allegiance to the cause. Still the threat of discovery is real, which is why meeting locations and various dead drop points are rotated throughly as to stay one step ahead of the corporate militia.
